Why Fumigation Is the Most Effective Way to Eliminate Drywood Termites

Termites are one of the most destructive pests a homeowner can face. Every year, they cause billions of dollars in structural damage across the United States, often silently eating away at homes from the inside out. When homeowners discover termites, one of the biggest questions becomes:

Should I do a local treatment or fumigate the entire home?

At Aguirre Fumigation, we believe homeowners deserve honest information so they can make the best decision for their property. While local treatments may work in certain situations, full-structure fumigation remains the most effective method for completely eliminating drywood termites throughout a home.

The Problem With Drywood Termites

Unlike subterranean termites that live underground, drywood termites live directly inside the wood they infest. They can spread throughout:

  • Attics
  • Wall framing
  • Ceilings
  • Roof structures
  • Window frames
  • Hidden inaccessible areas

One of the biggest challenges with drywood termites is that infestations are often far larger than what is visible from the outside. By the time homeowners notice termite droppings, damaged wood, or swarmers, termites may already exist in multiple areas throughout the structure.

Why Local Treatments Are Sometimes Limited

Localized or “spot” treatments target only visible or accessible termite activity. While these treatments can be helpful in small or isolated infestations, they may not eliminate termites hidden deep inside the structure.

Because drywood termites can spread behind walls and into inaccessible framing, treating only one visible area may leave other colonies untouched.

This is why many homeowners continue seeing termite activity months after a local treatment was performed.

Why Fumigation Works

Full-structure fumigation is designed to eliminate drywood termites throughout the entire structure,  including the areas you cannot see or reach.

During the fumigation process:

  1. The structure is completely enclosed with tarps.
  2. A professional fumigant is released throughout the home.
  3. The fumigant penetrates deep into wood, cracks, voids, attics, and hidden termite galleries.
  4. The fumigant reaches termites wherever they are living inside the structure.

Because the gas disperses throughout the entire home, fumigation can eliminate all stages of the termite lifecycle, including:

  • Workers
  • Soldiers
  • Reproductives
  • Nymphs
  • Eggs

What Does the Science Say?

The fumigant most commonly used in structural fumigation is Vikane® gas fumigant, manufactured by Douglas Products.

According to the manufacturer, Vikane is specifically designed to penetrate deeply throughout structures and wood members to eliminate drywood termites in inaccessible areas. Unlike localized surface treatments, Vikane reaches areas where termites are hidden behind walls, ceilings, and framing.

Scientific studies and industry data have shown that sulfuryl fluoride (the active ingredient in Vikane) is highly effective because it:

  • Penetrates porous materials, including wood
  • Reaches hidden termite galleries
  • Does not rely on termites contacting treated surfaces
  • Eliminates termites throughout the entire structure when properly applied

This is why fumigation is widely considered the gold standard for severe or widespread drywood termite infestations.

Does Fumigation Prevent Future Termites?

One important thing homeowners should understand is that fumigation eliminates the current infestation, but it does not leave behind a long-term residual barrier.

That means:

  • Fumigation removes the termites currently inside the home.
  • Future termite infestations are still possible over time.

This is why regular inspections remain important, especially in Southern California where termite activity is common year-round.

Is Fumigation Safe?

When performed by licensed professionals following state regulations, structural fumigation is considered safe and highly regulated.

Before re-entering the property, licensed fumigation professionals use specialized clearance equipment to confirm the home is safe for occupancy.

At Aguirre Fumigation, safety, communication, and proper preparation are always our top priorities throughout the fumigation process.

When Should You Consider Fumigation?

Fumigation is often recommended when:

  • Termites are found in multiple areas
  • Infestations are widespread
  • The extent of infestation is unknown
  • Previous local treatments have failed
  • The home has recurring drywood termite activity

Every property is different, which is why we provide honest inspections and recommendations based on your specific situation.
